When must you register for GST?
You must register for GST when your annual turnover reaches $75,000 (or $150,000 for non-profit organisations). Once registered, you must charge GST on your taxable supplies and lodge a BAS regularly.

What goes on a tax invoice?
For invoices over $1,000 your tax invoice must show: the words "Tax Invoice", your ABN, date, description, price excluding GST, GST amount and total including GST. For invoices under $1,000 a simplified format is acceptable.

GST credits (input tax credits)
If registered for GST you can claim back the GST you pay on business purchases. This is called an input tax credit. Keep all tax invoices โ€” you need them to claim GST credits on your BAS.

BAS lodgement
Most businesses lodge a BAS quarterly. Your BAS is due 28 days after the end of each quarter. You report GST collected from sales and GST paid on purchases โ€” you pay the difference (or receive a refund).

GST-free supplies
Some goods and services are GST-free including most basic foods, exports, some health services and educational courses. If your supply is GST-free you don't charge GST but can still claim credits on your purchases.

The easy GST formula
To add GST: multiply by 1.1. To remove GST from a GST-inclusive price: divide by 11 (this gives you the GST component). The GST-exclusive price is the total minus the GST amount. This calculator does it all instantly!

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate GST in Australia?
To add GST to a price, multiply by 1.1 (e.g. $100 ร— 1.1 = $110 including GST). To find the GST component of a GST-inclusive price, divide by 11 (e.g. $110 รท 11 = $10 GST). To find the GST-exclusive price, divide by 1.1 (e.g. $110 รท 1.1 = $100 excluding GST).
What is the GST rate in Australia?
The standard GST rate in Australia is 10%. This applies to most goods and services sold in Australia. Some supplies are GST-free (like basic food, exports and some health services) or input taxed (like financial supplies and residential rent).
Do I need to register for GST?
You must register for GST if your annual turnover is $75,000 or more (or $150,000 for non-profit organisations). Businesses under this threshold can register voluntarily. Taxi and ride-sharing drivers must register regardless of turnover.
How often do I need to lodge a BAS?
Most businesses lodge a Business Activity Statement (BAS) quarterly โ€” due 28 days after the end of each quarter. Some businesses may be eligible for annual BAS lodgement. Your ATO account will show your lodgement obligations once registered for GST.
Can I claim GST back on business purchases?
Yes โ€” if registered for GST, you can claim input tax credits for the GST included in business purchases. You need a valid tax invoice for purchases over $82.50 (including GST). Claim these credits on your BAS to reduce your net GST payable.
